Laboratory Based Survey for Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus
aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in
Ontario, Canada
A series of questionnaire surveys have been conducted
each year since 1995 in collaboration with the Laboratory
Proficiency Testing Program (LPTP) . Each licensed bacteriology
laboratory in the province of Ontario was asked to report the number
of patients identified with MRSA or VRE in their laboratory each
year and to describe their related laboratory and infection control
procedures.
These surveys were critical to the early recognition
of the dissemination of an epidemic clone of MRSA in Ontario's patient
population. Information from these surveys have been used to provide
recommendations for laboratory identification of this particular
clone and to determine appropriate infection control and patient
screening strategies. This comprehensive MRSA and VRE data has been
used by local, provincial and federal bodies in establishing recommendations
for the control of these antibiotic resistant organisms.
Survey information is regularly disseminated through
LPTP Newsletters and presentations
at scientific meetings.
