Slide culture was set up and the culture was sent to
the reference lab for speciation
• Slide
culture matured within few days
• LPAB
preparation was made showing structures resembling Acremonium
species
• Three
weeks later the reference lab reported culture identification
as Verticillium species, normally non pathogenic
• Due
to conflicting results, we decided to send the culture to the
National Center for Mycology in Alberta
• The
isolate was identified as Acremonium recifei by the UAMC
& Herbarium
• Patient
died due to unexplained illnesses
