Leishmania

A 60 year-old male patient from South America was admitted to the hospital with chest pain, cough and fever

Blood work and various other tests were ordered including lung biopsy for C&S and fungal investigation

Gram stain and fungal stain results were negative

Initial diagnosis as Leishmania was made using Giemsa

Patient was not responding to anti-parasitic treatment

On day 11 Histoplasma grew from culture in mycology

Patient was treated appropriately and immediately started to respond to antifungal therapy.
