Pinpoint Colony Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium Variant

In January 2005, our lab isolated a pinpoint colony vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) variant which is clonal and associated with nosocomial outbreaks.  The following images are of regular VRE and the new VRE variant plated on sheep blood agar after 24 hours of incubation at 30°C.
