Non-Outbreak Conditions ("New Normal")

  • Self-monitor: Do not come to work if you are sick.

  • Wash your hands before and after every patient contact

  • For patients with febrile respiratory illness (FRI)
    • Identify early: During appointment bookings and/or on arrival.
    • Provide surgical mask for patient.
    • Separate from other patients
    • Determine risk of SARS
    • Refer to SARS Risk Factor Screening Tool.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Use N95 respirator (mask) and protective eyewear when assessing patients with FRI
    • Add gown and gloves if there is ANY risk of SARS

  • These should all be routine practices in the post-SARS world.

 

SARS Outbreak Conditions

  • Essential staff only

  • Telephone triage

  • Display SARS notices

  • Patients to wash hands on arrival. Masks for those with fever OR respiratory symptoms.

  • Use the SARS screening tool for all patients on arrival.

    • If screen is negative:
      • Use routine practices
    • If screen is positive:
      • Contact history: Quarantine applies, notify public health
      • Fever AND/OR other symptoms: N95 respirator, eye protection, gloves, gown
      • Contact history AND symptoms: N95 respirator, eye protection, gloves, gown, and needs full investigation for SARS in ER (call ahead)
