An Ecologic
Study of Antimicrobial Resistance in Long Term Care Facilities in
Canada and the United States
Antibiotic use in long-term care facilities has been implicated
as a risk factor for the isolation of multi-drug resistant bacteria
such as MRSA, VRE and multi -drug resistant coliforms. Rates of
colonization and infection with these organisms appear to be higher
in the United States than in Canada. The reason for this difference
is unclear. This study will take advantage of the variation between
the two countries to try and understand the relationship between
antibiotic use and bacterial resistance. An ecologic survey will
be carried out in nursing homes in Canada and the United States
to determine rate of multi-drug resistant bacteria compared to rates
of antibiotic utilization in these same facilities.
