Discontinuation of Maintenance Therapy for Cytomegalovirus Retinitis in Patients who have Responded to Highly Active Retroviral Therapy

With the advent of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) and the resultant increase in CD4 cell count, the need for continued CMV maintenance therapy in HIV patients with previous CMV disease has been questioned. Therefore, this study will examine whether CMV maintenance therapy can be safely discontinued in patients with stable CMV disease and undetectable HIV viral load while on HAART. CMV in blood will be measured in blood on a regular basis using PCR and antigenemia assays. As well, patients will undergo regular opthalmologic examinations by an experienced opthalmologist in the field of CMV retinitis.
