Antibiotic Utilization in Chronic Care Hospitals in Southern
Ontario
In future, an increasing proportion of the population
will be elderly and reside in long-term care facilities. Numerous
studies have shown that medications are overused in this population,
however, the specific overuse of antibiotics has not been adequately
addressed. The objectives of this study are to determine the incidence
and describe the variability of antibiotic utilization in facilities
providing chronic care in Southern Ontario and to determine how
often minimal diagnostic consensus criteria for bacterial infections
are met when antibiotics are prescribed in these facilities.
