SARS Retrospective Cohort Study
The SARS Retrospective Cohort Study is being conducted
by the Canadian
SARS Research Network. The primary purpose of this study is
to collect information from all related cases of the GTA SARS outbreaks,
in order to assess the effectiveness of ribavirin and steroid treatment.
Ribavirin is a broad spectrum anti-viral agent. Steroids were used
based on anecdotal clinicial evidence and virological and pathological
data.
This study is important for determining the best method
of treatment for patients who have been diagnosed with SARS. In
the early days of the SARS outbreaks, patients were given a mix
of therapies to deal with an unknown pathogen. As time progressed,
therapies that were shown to be ineffective were eliminated. The
data collected from this study will further help the heathcare community
in determining which therapies are effective methods of preventing
the progression of SARS, and which are not.
